Finance for Non-Financial Managers (Unit Standards 117156 + 242810) (3 days)
Managers who can read an income statement and a balance sheet, use them to make sound financial decisions, and keep their own area's spending on budget – with 10 accredited credits.
Managers are expected to approve spending, defend budgets and make sense of the numbers, often without any financial training. This accredited finance for non-financial managers course combines two unit standards, each taught and assessed on its own: unit standard 117156 on interpreting basic financial statements (NQF Level 4, 4 credits), part of the FETC: New Venture Creation (SAQA ID 66249), and unit standard 242810 on managing expenditure against a budget (NQF Level 4, 6 credits), part of the FETC: Generic Management (SAQA ID 57712). BOTI delivers both under its Services SETA accreditation.
Day one follows unit standard 117156: what an income and expenditure statement and a balance sheet tell you, how assets and liabilities are classified, drawing up a personal statement of assets and liabilities, and using the figures to judge financial health, cost-to-income ratios and cash flow.
Days two and three follow unit standard 242810: what a budget means for your own area of responsibility, methods such as forecasting from past figures and zero-based budgeting, the resources and constraints that shape a budget, and tracking actual spending so that variances are found and corrected early.
