Leadership And Influence Course: Introduction
Most leaders come about through situational leadership. There is a situation which requires a leader and one is a appointed. Hopefully the best person to handle the situation. This course discusses the several leadership styles as well as the four categories of followers.
Leadership And Influence Course :Course Outline
Out of every sticky situation, a leader is born. There are some innate traits which every great leader has, but there are also traits that great leaders learn to use more effectively in leading. At the end of the day, people will only follow a leader who consistently appeals to the emotions of others while supporting his/her decisions with logic and remaining ethical. In this workshop we will discuss situational leadership; the most common sort of leadership in business. The Hershey-Blanchard model addresses situational leadership and the differences therein by looking at the people being lead. Not everyone is on the same maturity, compliance, motivational or intelligence level. Different people are motivated by different things and a good leader will tailor his leadership to suit his/her target audience. The diagram shows the four types of leadership styles: Telling, selling, participating and delegating. We will discuss transformative leadership in the workshop and will introduce participants to the Kouzes Posner model from their book: The Leadership Challenge. It breaks down what makes a subordinate willingly follow a leader into five aspects, one of which is leading by example. We move on to help participants create their own action plan, such as setting leadership goals. This plan will enable participants to develop and nurture leadership traits in order to become leaders or become better leaders. The first is by leading from the front or setting the example you want your employees to follow. Share your inspiration, your vision; with your employees and encourage them to challenge processes that do not work. Change what doesnt work into something that does. Do enable your employees to have their own authority on their level, they in turn lead lower ranking employees and by giving authority to others, a leader encourages responsibility from everyone. Aristotle gave us the ethos, pathos and logos which we still use today in the basics of persuasion, if something is important to you as a leader, encourage it from your heart. Aristotle was correct when he made his argument of appealing to the pathos with logos and never losing sight of ethos. We end off our workshop by discussing the principles of influence and creating an impact. We return to the beginning and we help participants re-evaluate their goals and their leadership plan. We help create a long term plan and a support system.
