Powerful Project Management for Project Team Members (3 days)

Staff who join a project know how it is run, what is expected of them and how to work with the team to deliver on time.

More and more work happens in projects – a new system, a new product, an office move, a compliance deadline. Staff are taken out of their normal jobs and placed in a project team with little idea of how projects are run or what is expected of them. This project team member training gives them that understanding, so they contribute from the first meeting instead of learning by trial and error.

Day one covers project fundamentals: what makes work a project, the project life cycle, types of projects, and the structures and roles found in project environments. Day two shows how projects are actually run, using the principles and performance domains of the PMBOK Guide (7th edition) – stakeholders, planning, delivery, measurement and risk – and the everyday tools team members meet, from the schedule to the risk register. Day three is about the team: how project teams develop, the behaviours of an effective team member, collaboration and joint decisions, handling conflict and building relationships with stakeholders.

The course is practical and built around a running case project. It is designed for team members and new project coordinators, not for project managers preparing for certification.

    Why this course

    For your organisation

    • Project staff who understand the process and their role in it
    • Fewer delays caused by unclear responsibilities and poor hand-offs
    • Better collaboration between project teams and the rest of the business
    • A common project vocabulary across departments

    For your delegates

    • A clear picture of how projects are planned, run and closed
    • Familiarity with the schedules, logs and reports you will be asked to use
    • Practical ways to contribute at each stage of a team's development
    • Confidence to raise issues, handle disagreements and work with stakeholders

What delegates will be able to do

    • Explain what a project is and how project work differs from routine work
    • Describe the project life cycle and the main types of projects and their complexity
    • Distinguish project management from general management and from technical work
    • Describe common project structures and the roles of sponsor, project manager and team
    • Explain the core principles and performance domains used to run projects
    • Use common project tools such as the work breakdown structure, schedule, RACI chart and risk register
    • Contribute effectively at each stage of a team's development
    • Collaborate with team members through consultation and joint decision-making
    • Deal with potential and actual conflict in a project team
    • Build working relationships with team members and stakeholders

    Who should attend

Staff who are assigned to project teams alongside or instead of their normal jobs – administrators, specialists, technicians, analysts, supervisors and coordinators – and new project coordinators who need a grounding before they manage projects themselves. No project experience is needed.

    Frequently asked questions

Can you run this course at our offices?

Yes. Most groups are trained at the client's premises anywhere in South Africa; we can also host it at a BOTI venue or deliver it live online.

    How many people can attend?

From one delegate to groups of about 20. Training a whole project team together, before or early in a project, works particularly well.

    Is it accredited?

No – it is a non-accredited short course and delegates receive a BOTI certificate of attendance.

Is this course for project managers?

It is aimed at team members and new project coordinators. People who will run projects themselves should look at BOTI's project management courses, which go further into planning, control and leadership.

Will it prepare delegates for PMP or CAPM exams?

No. It draws on the PMBOK Guide's principles to explain how projects are run, but it is not exam preparation and is not endorsed by the Project Management Institute.

Can you use one of our projects as the case study?

Yes. Brief the facilitator on a current or planned project and the exercises use it, which helps the team start working the same way.
