Developing New Managers Course: Introduction
Participants will learn how to identify potential candidates early, and once candidates have been identified, to begin training them early.
Developing New Managers Course :Course Outline
This workshop is part of a series of workshops on management. It is specifically related to the change management workshop. In this workshop which is meant for managers, we will discuss how managers are made. Not with sugar and spice or puppy dog tails, but with skills and development and mentoring. We will help managers create a management track which is valuable when defining the risks and competencies of potential managers. The management track will also allow the manager to see what tools the new manager needs and it will help to identify candidates early. Another tool participants learn is defining and building competencies, we will give you the know-how to identify strengths in people and their development needs. Building competencies also provides development opportunities.TIP: New managers learn by being managed well, it is particularly essential and effective to pair new managers with mentors. Looking at Anglo-American as an example, the previous six Chairmen of the board all began their careers at Anglo-American as the assistant to the then current Chairman. Continuing on the management track, another tool is to reward and emulate effective managers. The management track meeting can be held as a Lunch and Learn session where best practices are documented. We will teach participants how to provide tools for new managers such as manuals and policy documents. Also covered are how to empower new managers and how to provide support such as encouraging peer networking and mentor relationships, and how to establish resource people and regular check-ins. Participants will learn how to identify strong candidates early, and once candidates have been identified, to begin training them early. Managers will also be able to see who has management goals by identifying candidates through reviews. Sometimes the company structure is imposing thus we spend a module helping managers make the path to management clear in their companies. Also in this module we discuss the management track as a guidepost and how a clearly defined track ensures quality training. Towards the end of the workshop we will focus on how to support new managers, this includes empowering the new manager, allowing the new manager to make decisions, encouraging the new manager to ask for help. Well teach you how to support and not micro-manage those just stretching their wings for the first time and well teach you how to make those wings grow continually. We end this course off with a reminder on the importance of mentoring and the encouragement of regular feedback and support.
