Working with Business Data (Unit Standards 9012 + 14346) (3 days)

Staff who collect sound data, analyse and present it correctly, understand basic probability, and capture numbers and text on the company database accurately and securely – with 7 accredited credits.

Business decisions are only as good as the data behind them and the care with which it was captured. This accredited statistics and data capturing course combines two unit standards, each taught and assessed on its own: unit standard 9012, a fundamental unit standard on investigating life and work problems with data and probability (NQF Level 3, 5 credits), part of the National Certificate: Business Administration Services (SAQA ID 67465), and unit standard 14346 on processing numerical and text data (NQF Level 2, 2 credits), part of the National Certificate: Business Administration Services (SAQA ID 23833). BOTI delivers both under its Services SETA accreditation.

Days one and two follow unit standard 9012: posing questions that data can answer, designing questionnaires and samples that avoid bias, organising and summarising data, drawing graphs and scatter plots, interpreting the results, and using experiments, tree diagrams and simple counting to work out and test probabilities.

Day three follows unit standard 14346: choosing and logging into the right database, checking source documents, capturing numbers and text accurately and at the agreed speed, cross-checking entries, and saving and archiving the originals correctly.

    Why this course

    For your organisation

    • Surveys and data collection that give reliable, unbiased results
    • Reports that use statistics correctly and draw justified conclusions

    • Two accredited unit standards towards a Business Administration qualification

    For your delegates

    • Seven accredited credits from two unit standards
    • Confidence with averages, spread, graphs and probability
    • Practical questionnaire and sampling skills
    • A checking routine for accurate data capture

What delegates will be able to do

    • Identify problems that statistics can help solve and the variables involved
    • Collect data with suitable methods and representative samples
    • Summarise data with measures of centre and spread and suitable graphs
    • Interpret statistics to take and justify a position on a problem
    • Work out probabilities and tell theoretical from experimental results
    • Access the correct database securely and solve routine access problems
    • Capture and cross-check numerical and text data accurately
    • Save captured data and archive original documents according to procedure

    Who should attend

Data capturers, administrators, clerks, team leaders and junior analysts who collect, capture or report on business data. Unit standard 9012 assumes mathematics and communication at NQF Level 2; unit standard 14346 is open access, for delegates with a GETC or equivalent and communication and mathematical literacy at NQF Level 1.
