    Finance for Non-Financial Managers (Unit Standards 117156 + 114584) (3 days)

Managers without a finance background who read an income statement and balance sheet, work out what a new project or venture needs in capital, compare funding options and prepare a sound application – with 9 accredited credits.

Managers are expected to read financial statements and argue for funding, often without any finance training. This accredited course in finance for non-financial managers combines two unit standards from the FETC: New Venture Creation (SAQA ID 66249), each taught and assessed on its own: unit standard 117156 on interpreting basic financial statements (NQF Level 4, 4 credits) and unit standard 114584 on financing a new venture (NQF Level 4, 5 credits). Because both belong to the same qualification, BOTI registers them together as one skills programme under its Services SETA accreditation.

Day one follows unit standard 117156: the income and expenditure statement, the balance sheet, a personal statement of assets and liabilities, and using the statements to decide what to do about costs, income and cash flow.

Days two and three follow unit standard 114584: working out the capital a venture or project needs, comparing funding from banks and other institutions, preparing personal financial statements, meeting a lender's requirements, and alternatives such as equity, government schemes and leasing.
