Further Education and Training Certificate: Generic Management (NQF Level 4)

Your team leaders and supervisors earn a nationally recognised NQF Level 4 management qualification while they apply each skill to the team they already run.

Most supervisors are promoted because they were good at the job, not because anyone taught them to manage. The Further Education and Training Certificate: Generic Management is the generic management NQF 4 qualification for that first management step (SAQA ID 57712, 150 credits). It covers the four tasks of management – leading, managing yourself, managing people and running sound management practices – in a generic form that applies in any sector, so the programme can be related to your own industry.

BOTI delivers it as 30 contact days spread over 9 to 12 months, so learners use each block at work before the next one. Core unit standards cover leadership, the code of conduct, structured meetings, working towards objectives, the team leader's responsibilities, budgets, service levels, motivating a team, priorities and problem solving. Fundamentals build business writing, reading, spoken communication, statistics and financial mathematics. Electives add HIV/AIDS in the workplace, occupational health and safety, the functions of an organisation and how junior management relates to other roles.

BOTI delivers the qualification under its Services SETA accreditation (12582). It is a pre-2009 qualification kept open under the Minister's transitional arrangements, and the last date for new enrolments is 30 June 2028.
