After being through a business analysis course you should essentially be able to interpret the short and long term needs of a company and knowing when and why to apply certain principles. This, in theory, seems like a very complicated procedure, but when the definition is broken down into its two main components: short term analysis and long term analysis, it’s not so hard anymore.
Although this is a very simple example of something you’d find in a business analyst course, it still stands as one. The paragraph above is a very simplified version of something you’d learn in a business analysis course. Of course larger companies have more complicated needs rooted in big words like “hedge-funds” and “intra-company issues”, the act of analysing a business remains the same. If you apply the simple formula even the most complicated business analysis problems will remain simple to you.
Long term and short term applications might also differ and a true business analyzer will be able to understand and apply this. In our example we’ve used earlier of the small bakery, there will be different things the baker will have to do to meet his short term needs whilst striving towards his short term ambitions compared to doing the same for his long term needs. For instance, he will have to start making his breads earlier and opening his shop up earlier so that he can sell his entire dozen of breads earlier in the day and then having time to look for a cheaper supplier of flour. For his long term needs, he might need to borrow a truck from a friend to deliver more bread to the busier Johannesburg so that he will make more profit and in doing so pay off the rent of his current shop.
Seeing these concepts in terms of long and short term needs and ambitions lies at the heart of business analysis. Business analysis doesn’t have to be overly complicated and business analysis isn’t solely reserved with people with expensive degrees. Business analysis is a skill that could be refined by anyone.
