First-Time Manager Training: What New Managers Need

A first-time manager course teaches newly promoted staff the people skills they were never taught as specialists: delegating, directing work, coaching, giving feedback and handling difficult conversations. BOTI’s leadership and management training courses include short, practical first-time manager training that you can run in-house, at BOTI’s venue or live online. The goal is for your strongest specialists to become confident team leaders rather than overwhelmed ones.

Promoting a top performer into management is one of the most common moves a business makes, and one of the riskiest. The skills that made someone a great analyst, sales rep or engineer are not the skills that make a great manager. Without structured support, new managers often:

  • keep doing the technical work themselves;
  • struggle to delegate;
  • avoid difficult conversations;
  • lose the trust of the team they were meant to lead.

This page covers what first-time manager training includes, who it suits, how BOTI delivers it, and how it fits your skills development and B-BBEE planning.

The business problem first-time manager training solves

The “accidental manager” is a familiar risk. A specialist is promoted because of strong technical output and then left to work out leadership alone. The cost shows up quickly:

  • disengaged team members;
  • missed deadlines;
  • inconsistent feedback;
  • sometimes the resignation of the very person you promoted.

First-time manager training gives HR, L&D and operations leaders a deliberate way to close that gap. New managers get a shared toolkit and a common language for leading people. The move from “doing the work” to “getting work done through others” then follows a plan instead of being left to chance. Typical outcomes include:

  • A quicker, steadier start: new managers know what is expected of them and have practical tools from the first week.
  • Stronger team retention: staff are more likely to stay when their manager can coach, support and give clear direction.
  • Consistent people management: feedback, delegation and performance conversations follow one standard across the business.
  • Less manager overload: leaders stop hoarding work and start building team capacity.
  • A leadership pipeline: well-supported first-time managers become your future middle and senior leaders.

Directing and coaching: core branches of management skill

Management skills are often grouped into branches: planning, organising, directing and controlling, with coaching as the people-development skill that runs through them all. Directing and coaching are the two branches a first-time manager uses every day, and the two they are least prepared for.

  • Directing means setting clear goals, giving instructions, deciding priorities, communicating standards and checking progress. It is the “tell and follow up” side of management.
  • Coaching means building a person’s ability through questions, feedback and practice, so they can solve the problem themselves next time. It is the “ask and develop” side of management.

New managers usually lean too far one way. Some direct everything and become micromanagers. Others avoid giving direction and hope the team works it out. A useful rule of thumb follows from the team member’s experience:

  • Inexperienced team members need more direction.
  • Capable but unsure team members benefit from coaching.
  • Experienced, confident team members can be given a delegated task and a check-in date.

Good first-time manager training practises all three, so the manager can read the situation and switch styles. For more on the development side, see BOTI’s guide to the Coaching and Mentoring Training Course.

Who first-time manager training is for

This training is built for South African organisations developing their own staff and teams. It suits:

  • Newly promoted team leaders, supervisors and managers moving from a specialist or individual-contributor role into their first leadership position.
  • High-potential staff identified for promotion, trained before they step up.
  • HR and L&D leads rolling out a consistent management induction across departments or branches.
  • Business owners and department heads who need their new managers productive and confident quickly.
  • Existing managers who were promoted without formal training and need to fill the gaps.

Some delegates lead a frontline team rather than other managers. For them, Supervisory Skills for Team Leaders (2 days) adds depth on day-to-day supervision.

An in-house cohort gives your new managers a shared leadership vocabulary and one consistent standard to apply. That is hard to achieve when individuals attend courses on their own.

Course outline: what your new managers will learn

First-time manager training covers the core skills that turn a specialist into a people leader. Depending on your team’s needs, the programme can include:

  1. The shift from specialist to manager: letting go of the technical work, understanding the new role, and moving from “best doer” to “team enabler”.
  2. Delegation and prioritisation: assigning work effectively, building team capacity, and managing time across a team rather than a personal to-do list. BOTI’s Delegation Skills Training (1 day) covers this in more depth.
  3. Directing and motivating a team: setting clear goals, adapting leadership style, building trust, and understanding what drives performance and engagement.
  4. Communication and difficult conversations: giving clear instructions, listening actively, and handling underperformance and conflict with confidence.
  5. Performance management basics: setting expectations, giving constructive feedback and running useful one-on-ones.
  6. Coaching and developing people: growing team members rather than only directing them.
  7. Managing former peers: handling the awkward but common situation of leading colleagues you used to work alongside.

When the programme runs in-house, the facilitator can use your sector, your structures and your real management challenges as case studies.

Delivery formats

BOTI runs first-time manager training in three ways:

  • In-house at your premises: facilitated at your workplace and built around your own structures and examples. This gives the strongest transfer back to the job.
  • At BOTI’s venue: delegates attend at BOTI’s training venue in Sunningdale, Johannesburg.
  • Live online: instructor-led virtual sessions for teams spread across sites and branches.

Experienced practitioners facilitate all sessions. For a cohort of new managers, in-house delivery is usually the most practical choice, because everyone learns the same approach together.

Accreditation

BOTI is a QCTO-accredited Skills Development Provider and a Level 1 B-BBEE contributor. It also holds Services SETA accreditation 12582 for legacy qualifications. The first-time manager short courses on this page are not accredited. They are practical programmes for fast, targeted competence.

If you need a formal qualification for managers and supervisors, BOTI offers two routes:

Enrolment and completion dates differ from one qualification to the next, so check the SAQA record before you plan. Tell BOTI your accreditation and reporting objectives, and we will recommend the most suitable route.

Funding: skills development budget and B-BBEE

Management training can support your transformation and compliance planning as well as your leadership pipeline. As a general guide:

  • The Skills Development Levy (SDL) is 1% of the leviable amount (total remuneration). Employers whose leviable amount over the next 12 months will not exceed R500,000 are exempt[3].
  • Under the amended generic B-BBEE Codes, the overall skills development target is 6% of the leviable amount, not 6% of payroll[4]. It is made up of:
    • 3.5% on learning programmes for black people;
    • 2.5% on bursaries for black students at higher education institutions;
    • a further 0.3% for black employees with disabilities[4].

Sector codes may set different targets. Whether a particular programme is recognised on your scorecard depends on your verification agency and your records. BOTI can help you document delivery in a way that supports your Workplace Skills Plan and annual reporting.

This is general information, not financial or legal advice. Confirm the details with your B-BBEE verification agency or Skills Development Facilitator.

Frequently asked questions

What is first-time manager training?

First-time manager training is structured training that prepares newly promoted staff for the people side of management: delegation, directing work, coaching, giving feedback, handling difficult conversations and managing former peers. It helps a strong individual contributor become a manager who gets work done through a team.

Are directing and coaching branches of the skills a manager should have?

Yes. Directing and coaching are two branches of the people-management skills every manager needs. Directing means setting clear goals, giving instructions and checking progress. Coaching means building a team member’s ability through questions, feedback and practice. A first-time manager needs both and must learn when to use each.

Is first-time manager training accredited?

BOTI’s first-time manager short courses are practical, non-accredited programmes that end with a BOTI certificate of attendance. If you need a formal qualification, BOTI also offers the National Certificate: Generic Management (NQF Level 5) and the QCTO Occupational Certificate: Office Supervisor. Check the enrolment dates with BOTI before you plan.

Can first-time manager training be run in-house for our team?

Yes. BOTI runs the training in-house at your premises, at BOTI’s venue in Sunningdale, Johannesburg, or live online. In-house groups can use their own management scenarios as case studies, which gives new managers a shared language and a common standard.

How long is a first-time manager course?

The Developing New Managers Course runs for 1 day. For more depth, Supervisory Skills for Team Leaders runs for 2 days and Taking Charge as a Leader: Closing the Gap Between Specialist and Manager runs for 3 days. BOTI can recommend the right length for your team.
