Strategic Leadership Course for South African Teams

Strategic leadership courses train managers to move from day-to-day firefighting to setting direction, weighing options and making sound decisions under pressure, so the business moves deliberately towards its goals. BOTI runs this practical, facilitator-led training for South African management teams as part of its leadership and management training courses. It is delivered in-house at your premises, at BOTI’s venue in Sunningdale, Johannesburg, or live online.

If your managers are technically strong but stall when the choice is ambiguous, the priorities compete or the stakes are high, this course closes that gap. It is built for South African organisations developing their own people rather than for individual job-seekers.

The business problem: good managers, weak strategic decisions

Most managers are promoted for being excellent at the operational job. But running a function and directing it strategically are different skills, and the gap shows up in costly ways:

  • Decisions get deferred or rushed. Faced with ambiguity, managers either stall while waiting for certainty that never comes, or jump at the first option without weighing the trade-offs.
  • Effort scatters. Teams stay busy but pull in different directions because no one has translated company strategy into clear priorities for the department.
  • Short-term thinking wins. Urgent tasks crowd out important ones, so the long-term position erodes one reasonable-looking shortcut at a time.
  • Risk is misjudged. Managers either avoid every risk and miss opportunities, or take on exposure they have not properly thought through.

A strategic leadership course builds the skills that experience alone does not reliably develop. Managers learn to read the situation, frame the real choice, weigh options against the organisation’s goals, and commit to a decision their team can act on. These skills apply across budgeting, hiring, planning and crisis response, so the improvement carries into everything the manager handles.

Who this course is for

This is corporate training for South African organisations developing their own managers and leaders. It is written for the people who set direction and carry accountability:

  • HR and L&D managers building a consistent leadership and decision-making standard across the management layer.
  • Business owners and MDs who need their senior team to think strategically without every major call landing back on them.
  • Heads of department, operations and divisional managers who must turn company strategy into priorities and decisions for their own teams.
  • High-potential managers and succession candidates being prepared for broader, more senior leadership roles.

Delegates should already have some management responsibility. No formal qualification is required, because the course builds on real workplace experience rather than theory for its own sake.

Strategic leadership versus a general management and leadership course

A general course on leadership and management covers the foundations: planning work, delegating, motivating people and managing performance. Strategic leadership builds on those foundations. It focuses on direction, priorities and judgement: deciding what the team should be working on, and why, when resources are limited and the future is uncertain.

If your managers are new to the role, start with Management and Leadership Development Training. If they already manage well but need to think and decide at a more senior level, strategic leadership is the next step.

What the strategic leadership course covers

The programme is practical and scenario-based. Delegates work through realistic strategic and decision-making challenges drawn from South African workplaces, not abstract models. A typical outline:

Module What your managers learn
1. From operational to strategic The shift from managing tasks to setting direction; understanding the organisation’s strategy and their role in delivering it.
2. Strategic thinking and analysis Reading the internal and external environment, spotting trends and trade-offs, and thinking several moves ahead.
3. Setting direction and priorities Translating company strategy into clear, focused goals and priorities a team can actually execute.
4. Decision-making under uncertainty Structured frameworks for framing choices, weighing options and deciding with incomplete information.
5. Risk and trade-off analysis Identifying, sizing and balancing risk against opportunity rather than avoiding it or ignoring it.
6. Decisive leadership and judgement Committing to a course of action, owning the call, and avoiding analysis paralysis and decision drift.
7. Aligning and guiding the team Communicating the decision, securing buy-in, and mobilising people behind the chosen direction.
8. Reviewing and adapting Measuring outcomes, learning from decisions, and adjusting course without losing strategic focus.

Outlines are tailored to your sector and structure. An executive team setting annual strategy and a group of operations managers making daily resource calls need different emphases and examples.

Why strategic leadership is high-leverage training

Of all the skills you can develop in a management team, strategic leadership and decision-making give one of the broadest returns:

  • It improves future decisions. Better judgement and a clear framework apply to budgets, hiring, planning, supplier choices and crises alike. Managers improve how they handle every decision that follows, not just one problem.
  • It aligns effort. When managers translate strategy into clear priorities, teams stop scattering and start pulling in one direction.
  • It builds your bench. Developing strategic capability is how you prepare succession candidates and reduce dependence on a handful of senior people. Our guide to succession planning and the leadership pipeline explains how this fits together.
  • It shows in the work. Delegates practise on real pending decisions during the course, so they can apply the approach as soon as they return.

For many South African organisations, moving the management layer from operational to strategic thinking is a practical way to improve performance across the business.

Delivery formats

You choose the format that fits your team:

  • In-house at your premises. This is usually the most practical option for a group, and the course is built around your own strategy, structure and live decisions.
  • At BOTI’s venue in Sunningdale, Johannesburg. This suits management teams that prefer to plan away from daily interruptions.
  • Live online, facilitator-led. This works well for distributed and multi-site leadership teams, with no travel and a fully interactive session.

Online delivery means head-office and regional managers can train together and work to the same strategic standard.

Accreditation

BOTI (Business Optimization Training Institute) is a QCTO-accredited Skills Development Provider and a Level 1 B-BBEE contributor. The strategic leadership course itself is a non-accredited professional skills programme. It does not carry credits.

Where you need an accredited route for managers, BOTI offers the National Certificate: Generic Management (NQF Level 5). This is a legacy Services SETA qualification (BOTI accreditation 12582). Services SETA qualifications in BOTI’s range are open for enrolment until 30 June 2028, and learners must complete by 30 June 2031[1]. Check the qualification’s SAQA record when you plan, because dates differ per qualification.

Attendance on the short course is documented, so the training can be recorded in your Annual Training Report (ATR) as staff development. Tell us your reporting objective and we will recommend the right route.

Funding: plan leadership training inside your skills development budget

Developing your managers is staff development, so it belongs in your annual skills planning. As general guidance only:

  • Employers who pay the Skills Development Levy (SDL) pay 1% of payroll[2]. Training for your staff, including leadership and management development, belongs in your Workplace Skills Plan (WSP) and Annual Training Report (ATR).
  • The mandatory grant pays back 20% of levies paid[3]. To claim it, you must submit the WSP/ATR to your SETA by 30 April and be up to date with levy payments. Unclaimed mandatory grant money moves to discretionary funding by 15 August[3].
  • Your sector SETA may also open discretionary grant windows for prioritised skills. Check with your Skills Development Facilitator when you plan annual training.

This is general information, not financial or legal advice. Confirm the details with your SETA or Skills Development Facilitator.

Frequently asked questions

What is a strategic leadership course?

It is practical training that helps managers move their focus from day-to-day operations to setting direction and making sound decisions under pressure. Delegates learn to think strategically, translate company strategy into clear priorities, weigh options and risk, and commit to and lead a course of action. The emphasis is on judgement and decision-making applied to real workplace situations.

Who should attend strategic leadership training?

It suits senior and middle managers, heads of department, operations and divisional leaders, business owners and high-potential succession candidates. In short, it is for anyone who sets direction and carries accountability for outcomes. Delegates should already have some management responsibility. HR and learning and development managers often roll it out across a management group to build a consistent strategic standard.

Is the strategic leadership programme accredited?

No. The strategic leadership programme is a non-accredited professional skills programme, and attendance is documented for your Workplace Skills Plan and Annual Training Report. If you need an accredited route for managers, BOTI offers the National Certificate: Generic Management (NQF Level 5) through the Services SETA, which is open for enrolment until 30 June 2028.

What is the difference between a strategic leadership course and a management and leadership course?

A management and leadership course covers the foundations of running a team, such as planning, delegating, motivating and managing performance. A strategic leadership course builds on those foundations and focuses on setting direction, choosing priorities and making decisions under uncertainty. New managers usually start with the foundations, and experienced managers move on to strategic leadership.

How long does the strategic leadership course take, and where is it delivered?

BOTI’s Executive and Senior Management Programme runs over 3 days, and the content can be tailored to your team’s level and objectives. Training runs in-house at your premises, at BOTI’s venue in Sunningdale, Johannesburg, or live online for distributed and multi-site teams.
