Delegation Skills Training for Managers

Delegation training for managers teaches team leaders to hand work over properly: choosing the right task and the right person, briefing the outcome clearly, agreeing the level of authority and check-in points, and following through. Done well, delegation frees the manager’s time, develops the team and stops one overloaded person from becoming the bottleneck. BOTI runs it as a practical one-day course within its leadership and management training courses, in-house at your premises, at BOTI’s venue in Sunningdale, Johannesburg, or live online.

This article is for HR and L&D leads, business owners, and department or operations managers whose team leaders are drowning in detail while their people sit under-used. As a QCTO-accredited skills training provider, BOTI sees this pattern often. The article covers what the training is, the business problem it solves, who it is for, what it covers, how it is delivered, accreditation, and how it fits your Skills Development budget.

The business problem: your managers are doing, not leading

When a strong performer is promoted into management, a predictable thing happens. They keep doing the work that made them good, and they never let go of it. They take everything on themselves, become the bottleneck their team waits on, and burn out while their staff stay under-developed. Work that should be lifting a whole team is stuck in one person’s inbox.

For the business, the cost shows up in several places at once:

  • Capacity is wasted. Skilled people are paid to think, but a manager who will not delegate leaves them waiting for sign-off instead.
  • Managers burn out. The person you most need working at a strategic level is buried in tasks two pay grades below them.
  • Succession stalls. Staff never get stretched, so you have no bench strength and no one ready to step up.
  • Decisions slow down. Everything routes through one overloaded individual, and turnaround times suffer across the team.

Delegation skills training fixes the root cause. It gives managers a repeatable method for handing work over with confidence. The manager gets time back for higher-value work, the team grows, and the business stops depending on a single bottleneck.

Who this course is for

This is training for South African organisations developing their own managers and team leaders. It suits:

  • New and first-line managers who were promoted for technical skill and now need to lead through others.
  • Experienced managers and supervisors who are overloaded and want to free capacity without dropping the ball.
  • HR and L&D teams rolling out a consistent management or leadership development programme across the business.
  • Business owners and managing directors of SMEs who need their few managers to multiply their effort, not just absorb it.
  • Team and project leaders who must get work done through people they do not directly manage.

No prior management qualification is required. The course is practical and built around the real handover situations your managers face every week.

What delegation skills training covers

BOTI shapes the outline to your team, but a typical delegation skills training programme covers the following:

Module What managers learn
Why managers don’t delegate Spotting the real blockers (perfectionism, “it’s faster if I do it”, fear of losing control) and replacing them
What to delegate and what to keep Sorting tasks by value and risk, and identifying the work that should never have sat with the manager
Matching task to person Reading skill and readiness, and stretching people without setting them up to fail
Briefing for a clean handover Defining the outcome, deadline, boundaries and what “done” looks like, so that work comes back right the first time
Levels of authority Setting how far the person can act alone, from “recommend only” to “decide and act”
Check-ins without micromanaging Agreeing milestones and reporting points that give oversight without taking the task back
Giving feedback and following through Reviewing the work, coaching for next time, and recognising good delivery
Delegation as development Using handovers deliberately to grow capability and build a stronger bench

The emphasis throughout is on application. Managers leave with a method and the practised confidence to use it on Monday, not a set of theories.

Delivery formats

How you deliver the training affects both cost and convenience. BOTI offers three options:

  • In-house at your premises. This is usually the most cost-effective option for a group. It is a strong fit for delegation because managers practise on their own real tasks and team scenarios.
  • At BOTI’s venue in Sunningdale, Johannesburg. This suits teams that prefer to train away from daily interruptions.
  • Live online, instructor-led. This is efficient for distributed management teams, with no travel and a fully interactive session.

Live online delivery means head-office and branch managers can be trained to the same standard, wherever they are based.

Accreditation

BOTI is a QCTO-accredited Skills Development Provider and a Level 1 B-BBEE contributor. It also holds Services SETA accreditation (12582) for legacy unit-standard qualifications. The Delegation Skills Training course itself is a non-accredited professional skills programme. It is short and practical, and it focuses on how managers actually behave at work.

If you need a formal qualification route for your managers, a broader management qualification such as the National Certificate: Generic Management (NQF Level 5) may suit. This is a legacy Services SETA qualification. Its SAQA record shows a last date for enrolment of 30 June 2028 and a last date for achievement of 30 June 2031[1]. Dates differ per qualification, so check the SAQA record before you enrol. Whichever route you choose, attendance and outcomes are documented so that the training can be recorded in your Annual Training Report (ATR) as staff development. When you book, tell us whether you need formal certification or a practical skills outcome, and we will recommend the right structure.

Funding: using your Skills Development budget

Delegation skills training is the kind of management development a skills budget is meant to cover. As general guidance only:

  • Employers pay the Skills Development Levy (SDL) at 1% of the leviable amount (total remuneration)[2]. Employers whose leviable amount over the next 12 months will not exceed R500,000 are exempt[2]. SARS collects the levy, and it funds the SETAs and the National Skills Fund.
  • Training delivered to your managers belongs in your Workplace Skills Plan (WSP) and Annual Training Report (ATR). The mandatory grant (20% of levies paid) is paid back when the WSP/ATR is submitted by 30 April and your levy payments are up to date[3]. Unclaimed mandatory grant money moves to discretionary funding by 15 August[3].
  • Under the amended generic B-BBEE Codes, the overall skills development target is 6% of the leviable amount, not 6% of payroll. This is made up of 3.5% on learning programmes for black people and 2.5% on bursaries for black students at higher education institutions[4]. Sector codes may differ. Whether a programme scores is decided at verification, so planned, documented training helps but no points are guaranteed.
  • Your sector SETA may run discretionary grants for prioritised skills and management development. These are worth checking when you plan your annual training.

Where skills development supports tender readiness, note that public procurement still runs under the PFMA, the MFMA, the Preferential Procurement Policy Framework Act (PPPFA) and the Preferential Procurement Regulations, 2022. These regulations score “specific goals” rather than a generic B-BBEE level. The Public Procurement Act 28 of 2024 never came into force, and on 17 September 2026 the Constitutional Court declared the whole Act invalid[5]. Parliament may pass a new procurement law. A clean, documented training record supports both your scorecard and your bid positioning. This is general information, not financial or legal advice. Confirm the specifics with your SETA, Skills Development Facilitator (SDF) or B-BBEE verification professional.

Frequently asked questions

What is delegation skills training?

Delegation skills training teaches managers how to hand work to their team effectively. It covers deciding what to delegate, matching the task to the right person, briefing the outcome and boundaries clearly, setting the level of authority, agreeing check-in points and following through with feedback. The goal is to free the manager’s capacity, develop their people and stop the manager being a bottleneck, so that the whole team produces more.

Who should attend delegation training for managers?

The course suits new and first-line managers who were promoted for technical skill, experienced managers and supervisors who are overloaded, and team or project leaders who get work done through people they do not directly manage. It is designed for South African organisations developing their own managers and team leaders. No prior management qualification is required.

How is the delegation skills course delivered?

BOTI delivers the course in-house at your premises, at its venue in Sunningdale, Johannesburg, or live online for distributed teams. In-house delivery suits delegation particularly well because managers practise on their own real tasks and team scenarios.

Does delegation training count towards our skills development spend?

It can. Record the training in your Workplace Skills Plan and Annual Training Report, which supports your mandatory grant claim, and keep attendance records for your B-BBEE skills development scorecard. Whether it scores depends on your sector code and verification, so confirm the specifics with your SETA, SDF or B-BBEE verification professional.

How long is the delegation skills course and can it be customised?

BOTI’s Delegation Skills Training runs over one day. It can be shaped around your managers’ real tasks, or built into a broader management development programme. Tell us your managers’ situation and the outcome you want, and we will shape the outline and quote it.
