Leadership & Management Training in Durban

Looking for leadership training in Durban, or in-house leadership training anywhere in South Africa? BOTI runs practical leadership and management courses for your own team at your premises, at BOTI’s venue in Sunningdale, Johannesburg, or live online. Browse the full range of leadership and management training courses or read on to see how in-house delivery works for Durban employers.

BOTI delivers in-house Leadership & Management courses on-site across Umhlanga, the Durban CBD and Pinetown. Your supervisors, team leaders and managers train together, on the challenges they actually face. The training is practical and built around how your business runs in KwaZulu-Natal.

This page is for Durban employers who want to develop the people they already have. If you are an HR or L&D lead, a business owner, or a manager buying development for your staff, here is how it works.

Why Durban businesses invest in leadership development

KZN’s economy puts particular pressure on its managers. The province relies heavily on ports, logistics, manufacturing and retail. In these sectors, a shift supervisor, line manager or branch manager can make or lose money in a single day.

  • Ports and logistics: Durban’s container port and the logistics network around it run around the clock. Operations leaders manage shifts, throughput targets and safety-critical teams, and weak supervision shows up quickly in delays and incidents.
  • Manufacturing: The industrial belt through Pinetown, New Germany and the south of the city needs front-line leaders who can hold production standards, manage labour relations and drive continuous improvement.
  • Retail and distribution: In Umhlanga’s commercial hubs and high-volume distribution centres, store and team managers carry stock, service and people targets at once.

In each of these sectors, the gap is rarely technical. It is the jump from “good at the job” to “able to lead the people doing the job”. That is the gap this training addresses.

In-house and on-site delivery across Durban

We bring the training to you. BOTI’s facilitators deliver at your premises in the Durban metro. Your team avoids travel, avoids a lost day in traffic on the N2 or M7, and does not sit with delegates from unrelated companies.

Where you are How we deliver
Umhlanga / uMhlanga Ridge On-site at your offices in the Ridge precinct. This suits retail head offices, financial services and corporate teams.
Durban CBD / Point On-site in the central business district, for logistics, shipping, public-sector-adjacent and services firms.
Pinetown / Westmead / New Germany On-site at factories and warehouses in the western manufacturing corridor. Ask about scheduling around your shifts.

You choose the format. Many clients prefer in-house at their own premises, in their own boardroom or training room, because the examples, case studies and role-plays come straight from their business.

There are two other options:

  • If you would rather take people off-site, delegates can attend at BOTI’s venue in Sunningdale, Johannesburg.
  • For teams split across branches or working hybrid, live online delivery is available.

What the course teaches

The Leadership & Management training moves delegates from managing tasks to leading people. Core topics include:

  • The leadership transition: moving from doing the work to getting work done through others
  • Communication and influence: giving direction, having difficult conversations, and being heard
  • Delegation and accountability: assigning work clearly and following through
  • Motivating and engaging teams: especially across shifts, depots and the shop floor
  • Performance management: setting standards, giving feedback, and handling under-performance fairly
  • Conflict resolution and labour-relations awareness: essential in manufacturing and logistics settings
  • Decision-making and problem-solving under operational pressure
  • Leading change: keeping teams steady through restructures, new systems and growth

Content is adjusted to your delegates’ level, whether first-time team leaders, mid-level managers or senior managers. It is also adjusted to your sector, so a port-operations group and a retail group do not work through the same generic examples.

Choosing the right leadership course

BOTI runs several leadership and management courses. The right one depends on who is attending and what needs to change:

Who it is for

  • Newly promoted supervisors and team leaders stepping up for the first time
  • Line, branch, depot and warehouse managers
  • Mid-level managers being developed for senior roles
  • Business owners who want a consistent leadership standard across their teams

Accreditation

BOTI is a QCTO-accredited Skills Development Provider and a Level 1 B-BBEE contributor. It also holds Services SETA accreditation 12582 for legacy qualifications.

The leadership courses on this page are short professional skills programmes, not qualifications. If your organisation needs a credit-bearing route, BOTI offers the National Certificate: Generic Management (NQF Level 5), SAQA ID 59201. This is a legacy Services SETA qualification. Its last date for enrolment is 30 June 2028 and its last date for achievement is 30 June 2031[1].

Dates for legacy qualifications differ from one qualification to the next, so check the SAQA record before you enrol. Tell us your goal and we will match the format.

Funding: skills development budget and B-BBEE

Leadership training is a practical way to plan your skills development spend. Here is how the levy, the grants and the B-BBEE scorecard relate to it:

  • Skills Development Levy (SDL): Employers pay the SDL at 1% of the leviable amount (total remuneration). Employers whose leviable amount over the next 12 months will not exceed R500,000 are exempt[2].
  • Mandatory grant: 20% of the levies you paid can come back as a mandatory grant. This depends on submitting your Workplace Skills Plan and Annual Training Report by 30 April and being up to date with levy payments. Unclaimed mandatory grant money moves to discretionary funding by 15 August[3]. Leadership training you run can be planned in your WSP and reported in your ATR.
  • B-BBEE skills development: Under the amended generic Codes, the overall skills development target is 6% of the leviable amount. That is made up of 3.5% on learning programmes for black people and 2.5% on bursaries for black students at higher education institutions. A further 0.3% applies for black employees with disabilities[4]. Sector codes may differ. How leadership training is recognised depends on who attends and how the spend is recorded.

This is general guidance to help you plan, not financial or legal advice. Your accountant or B-BBEE verification agency should confirm the exact treatment for your business. BOTI does not promise grants or scorecard points.

Training leadership teams across KZN and South Africa

We deliver the same training for teams in other cities, so multi-site KZN and national groups get a consistent standard:

Frequently asked questions

Do you deliver leadership training at our premises in Durban?

Yes. BOTI facilitators can run the training at your premises in the Durban metro, including Umhlanga, the CBD and Pinetown. Delegates can also attend at BOTI’s venue in Sunningdale, Johannesburg, or join live online.

What is in-house leadership training and when does it make sense?

In-house leadership training is a course run for one organisation’s own team, usually at its own premises. It makes sense when you have a group of supervisors or managers to train together and want examples drawn from your own operation. Ask BOTI which group size suits the format you have in mind.

Is the leadership training accredited?

No. The Leadership and People Management course is a short professional skills programme, not an accredited qualification. If you need a credit-bearing route, ask BOTI about the National Certificate: Generic Management, a legacy Services SETA qualification, and check its enrolment dates on the SAQA record.

Can leadership training count toward our skills development spend and B-BBEE scorecard?

It can be planned as part of your skills development spend and reported in your Annual Training Report. Whether it counts on your B-BBEE scorecard depends on who attends and how the spend is recorded, and your verification agency makes that decision. BOTI does not promise grants or points.

Can you tailor the content to ports, manufacturing or retail?

Yes. We adapt case studies, examples and role-plays to your sector and your delegates’ level, so a logistics, manufacturing or retail group works on realistic, relevant scenarios rather than generic management theory.
