Sales rep training gives your reps a repeatable, end-to-end selling process: prospecting, needs discovery, product pitch, objection handling, closing, follow-up and CRM discipline. The aim is for them to convert more of the leads they already have. BOTI’s practical, facilitator-led 1-day Sales Skills: Basic Training course is built for South African sales managers who want consistent team performance, and it sits within BOTI’s wider range of sales, marketing and customer care training courses.

If you manage reps, you already know the pattern: a couple of strong performers carry the number while the rest plateau. The gap is rarely effort. It is method. Reps who improvise every call have no shared language for how a deal moves forward. As a result, deals stall, discounts creep in and pipeline forecasts become guesswork. Structured sales skills training addresses this by giving every rep the same disciplined process.
Effective rep training is not a motivational talk. It builds competence across the full sales cycle. Below are the seven core rep skills and why each one matters.
| Rep skill | What it builds | Performance payoff |
|---|---|---|
| Prospecting | Finding and connecting with the right clients, qualifying early | Fuller pipeline, less time wasted on bad-fit leads |
| Needs discovery | Questioning to identify the real problem before pitching | Higher-value deals, fewer “no decision” outcomes |
| Product pitch | Translating features into client-specific benefits | Shorter sales cycles, clearer differentiation |
| Objection handling | Anticipating objections and structured response techniques | Fewer deals lost at the eleventh hour |
| Closing | Confirming commitment and asking for the business | Higher conversion on existing opportunities |
| Follow-up | Disciplined post-meeting and post-sale contact | More repeat business and referrals |
| CRM discipline | Logging activity, stage and next steps consistently | Accurate forecasts and a pipeline you can coach from |
The BOTI Sales Skills: Basic Training course maps onto this cycle across four modules:
If objections are where your team loses most deals, the 1-day Overcoming Sales Objections Course goes deeper on that stage.
You are not only buying a course. You are buying a more predictable number. When every rep runs the same process, three things change:
Before you book, it helps to know where your team’s gaps are. Ask BOTI to help you assess each rep against the seven core skills. You can then train the gap that matters rather than a generic syllabus. Ask about a needs assessment with your quote.

Group bookings for a whole team are usually the most practical way to build one shared selling process. Proposals can be customised to your sector, product set and sales channel. Use the price box on the course page, or request a quote for your group.
Generic role plays only go so far. Training sticks when reps practise with the products, price points and objections they meet every week. When you brief BOTI, share your typical customer types, your sales cycle length, the objections your reps hear most often and the CRM stages you use. The facilitator can then build exercises around real scenarios. For example, a field sales team might work through a full discovery-to-close role play, while an inside sales team focuses on qualification and follow-up.
This basic course is the right starting point for most reps. Many teams then move on to one of BOTI’s more comprehensive sales programmes, such as the 2-day Effective Sales Training, for deeper consultative skills. The pathways below show how the options fit together.
Do you run a telephone-led team? BOTI also runs a dedicated 1-day Professional Selling Over the Phone Training course. It covers gaining customer commitment, studying the market, developing a sales strategy and closing effectively. Ask us to include it in your proposal.
This sales skills course is a practical, facilitator-led programme, and delegates receive a BOTI certificate of attendance. Some sales staff need a formal qualification. For them, BOTI offers the National Occupational Certificate: Sales Representative (SAQA ID 121792, NQF Level 4, 155 credits)[3]. The last date for enrolment is 30 January 2030[3]. It ends in an External Integrated Summative Assessment (EISA), and the QCTO issues the certificate.
On the B-BBEE side, the skills development target is measured as a percentage of your leviable amount. This is the same base used for the Skills Development Levy, which is 1% of the leviable amount[1]. The amended generic Codes set a target of 3.5% of the leviable amount for spending on learning programmes for black people[2], and sector codes may differ. Whether a specific programme counts depends on how it is structured and recorded. BOTI can help you plan a mix of training that suits your skills development planning, but we do not promise scorecard points. This is general guidance, not financial or legal advice, so confirm specifics with your B-BBEE consultant.
