Management and Leadership Development Training (2 days)

New and junior managers understand what the management job involves, make sound decisions and manage the performance of their people and team from goal-setting to review.

First-line managers make most of the day-to-day decisions in an organisation, yet many have never been shown how the management job fits together. They plan when there is time, react when there is not, and leave performance to the annual review. This two-day management and leadership training gives new and junior managers the basics of the role in one practical package. It is corporate leadership training for first-line managers, not an executive programme.

Day one covers the management functions: what it takes to run a successful business or business unit, the cycle of planning, organising, leading and controlling, the tasks a manager is accountable for, and a step-by-step process for making management decisions. Delegates then apply the functions to their own section. Day two covers managing performance: setting goals and measures for individuals and the team, drawing up development plans, and monitoring and evaluating results with regular feedback.

The examples come from the delegates' own work – small businesses, departments, cost centres and sections – so each manager leaves with a decision they have worked through, goals for their team and a development plan for at least one team member.

    Why this course

    For your organisation

    • New managers who understand the whole management job, not only the technical part

    For your delegates

    • A clear picture of what the management role involves
    • A decision-making process tested on a real decision
    • Goals and measures for your own team
    • A development plan for one team member and practice in a performance discussion

What delegates will be able to do

    • Explain the planning, organising, leading and controlling functions and how they connect
    • Identify the main tasks and responsibilities of a first-line manager
    • Use a structured process to make and review a real management decision
    • Apply the management functions to your own section or business
    • Set clear goals and measures for individuals and for the team
    • Draw up practical development plans for team members
    • Monitor and evaluate individual and team performance and act on the results

    Who should attend

Newly appointed managers and those with a few years in the role who have never had formal management training: supervisors, team leaders, section heads and other first-level managers, as well as owners and managers of small businesses. It also suits high-potential staff being prepared for their first management role.
