Project Management Courses Online vs In-House: Which Suits Your Team?

The online management courses that suit a project team most are live, facilitator-led sessions that teach one shared method for planning, scheduling, budgeting and managing risk, which staff can apply to their projects straight away. BOTI runs its project management, agile and process improvement courses live online, at its venue in Sunningdale, Johannesburg, or in-house at your premises. Choose online when your people work across sites. Choose in-house when you want the course built around your own projects.

If you are an HR, L&D or operations leader weighing up how to upskill your project staff, the choice between online and in-house is not just about price. It affects how well the learning carries back into real projects, how much disruption your team absorbs, and how the spend fits your skills development and B-BBEE plans. This page sets out what each format covers, who each one suits, how BOTI delivers them and how the investment can be funded.

The business problem PM training solves

Projects fail quietly. Scope creeps, deadlines slip, budgets overrun and stakeholders lose confidence. The cause is usually not that the work was impossible. It is that no one applied a consistent project management discipline. When teams run projects on instinct rather than method, the same avoidable problems come back on every initiative.

Structured project management training fixes this for South African businesses. It gives staff a shared framework for planning, scheduling, budgeting, managing risk and reporting progress. Your people may manage IT rollouts, construction packages, marketing campaigns or operational change. In each case a common PM language means fewer surprises, tighter delivery and stakeholders who trust the timeline. Typical outcomes include:

  • Predictable delivery: projects scoped, scheduled and tracked against a clear baseline.
  • Fewer cost overruns: disciplined budgeting and change control from the start.
  • Better risk management: issues anticipated and dealt with early, rather than fought as fires.
  • Clear stakeholder reporting: one consistent way to communicate status, risks and decisions.
  • A repeatable standard: every project run to the same method, not reinvented each time.

Who project management training is for

This training is built mainly for South African organisations upskilling their own staff and teams. It suits:

  • Existing and aspiring project managers who need a formal, structured method.
  • Team leaders and coordinators running projects alongside their day jobs.
  • Functional staff in IT, engineering, construction, marketing, operations or finance who manage initiatives without a PM title.
  • HR and L&D leads standardising project delivery across departments or branches.
  • Business owners and department heads who need projects delivered on time and on budget.

BOTI delivers for groups, so both the online and the in-house option give your team one consistent project management standard. Everyone learns the same method together, rather than individuals learning in isolation and bringing back different habits.

Course outline: what your team will learn

BOTI’s project management courses cover the full project lifecycle and can be tailored to your sector and the methods you use. Depending on the level you choose, the programme can include:

  1. Project fundamentals: what defines a project, the project lifecycle, and the role and responsibilities of the project manager.
  2. Initiation and scoping: defining objectives, deliverables and success criteria, and developing the project charter.
  3. Planning and scheduling: work breakdown structures, task sequencing, the critical path and building a realistic timeline.
  4. Budgeting and cost control: estimating, setting a baseline and tracking project spend.
  5. Risk and issue management: identifying, assessing and reducing risks before they derail delivery.
  6. Stakeholder and communication management: keeping sponsors and teams aligned with clear reporting.
  7. Execution, monitoring and control: managing progress, change and quality against the plan.
  8. Closure and lessons learned: formal sign-off and capturing improvements for the next project.

Where useful, training can include common tools and methods, such as Gantt charts and recognised PM frameworks. In the in-house format, your own live projects can be used as worked case studies.

Online vs in-house: how to choose

Both formats are led by a facilitator and cover the same core method. The difference lies in delivery, reach and how deeply the content is tailored. Use the comparison below to match the format to your team.

Consideration Project management courses online In-house / on-site
Suits Staff spread across sites, branches or working remotely A whole team or department in one location
Tailoring Standard curriculum, facilitator-led and interactive Built around your real projects and templates
Travel & disruption None: delegates join from their desks Facilitator comes to you; no staff travel
Cohort effect Strong across distributed teams Strongest: shared room, shared standard
Scheduling Flexible; easy to split across sessions Arranged around your operational calendar
Cost efficiency Economical for dispersed individuals and small groups Usually most economical per delegate for larger groups

As a rule of thumb, choose online when your project staff are spread across several cities or remote sites and you want flexible delivery with little disruption. Choose in-house when you have a group in one place and want the content anchored to your own projects, templates and sector. Some organisations combine the two: online sessions for distributed staff and an in-house course for the core delivery team.

Delivery formats and national reach

BOTI’s live online sessions reach staff wherever they work. In-house delivery takes a facilitator to your premises. Delivery options include:

  • Project management courses online: live, facilitator-led virtual sessions your team joins from any location, suited to multi-site and remote staff.
  • In-house / on-site training: run at your premises and built around your own project structures and examples. This is usually the most economical option once you have several delegates.
  • Training at BOTI’s venue: sessions at BOTI’s venue in Sunningdale, Johannesburg.
  • Blended delivery: a mix of online and on-site sessions for teams across several branches.

Programmes are run by experienced practitioners. A group booking, online or in-house, is typically the most economical route for a team.

Accreditation

BOTI’s short project management courses, online or in-house, are professional skills programmes and are not accredited. When your organisation needs a formal qualification, there is a separate accredited route. BOTI is a QCTO-accredited Skills Development Provider for the Occupational Certificate: Project Manager (SAQA ID 101869), which is registered at NQF Level 5 with 240 credits[1].

The qualification combines knowledge, practical skills and workplace experience. It ends in an External Integrated Summative Assessment (EISA), and the QCTO issues the certificate. Tell us your reporting objectives and we will recommend whether a short course or the occupational certificate fits your team. You can also browse BOTI’s accredited course catalogue to compare options.

Last dates for new enrolments: for the Project Manager qualification (SAQA ID 101869), new learners must enrol by 30 December 2026 and complete by 30 December 2029[1]. New learners must enrol before the enrolment date shown.

Funding: skills development budget and B-BBEE

Spend on project management training can support your skills development and transformation plans as well as your delivery capability. As a general guide:

  • The Skills Development Levy (SDL) is 1% of the leviable amount, which is total remuneration. Employers whose leviable amount over the next 12 months will not exceed R500,000 are exempt[2].
  • The SETA mandatory grant pays back 20% of the levies paid. You must submit the Workplace Skills Plan (WSP) and Annual Training Report (ATR) by 30 April, and your levy payments must be up to date. Unclaimed mandatory grant money moves to discretionary funding by 15 August[3].
  • The B-BBEE skills development target is measured against the leviable amount, not total payroll. Under the amended generic Codes, the overall target is 6%: 3.5% on learning programmes for black people and 2.5% on bursaries for black students at higher education institutions. There is a further 0.3% target for black employees with disabilities[4]. Sector codes may differ.

We will work with your HR and L&D team to document delivery, online or in-house, in a way that supports your WSP and ATR reporting. How any spend counts on your scorecard is decided by your verification agency, not by BOTI.

This is general information, not financial or legal advice. Confirm specifics with your B-BBEE verification agency or Skills Development Facilitator.

Frequently asked questions

Are project management courses online as effective as in-house training?

BOTI’s online courses are live and facilitator-led, not self-paced videos, so delegates work with the facilitator and with each other throughout. Online suits teams spread across sites or working remotely. In-house delivery has the edge when you want the content built around your own live projects and a whole team trained together in one room. Some organisations combine the two.

Which online management courses suit project staff?

For a quick start, BOTI runs a 3-hour online masterclass, Basic Project Management: Plan, Deliver and Keep Teams on Track. For a fuller grounding, Project Management Fundamentals runs over 2 days and Powerful Project Management for Project Team Members runs over 3 days. Both can be delivered live online or in-house. Teams that work with agile methods can add Scrum Fundamentals Certified (SFC) or Scrum Master Certified (SMC) training.

Is project management training accredited?

BOTI’s short project management courses are professional skills programmes without accreditation, and delegates receive a certificate of attendance. If you need a formal qualification, BOTI is a QCTO-accredited Skills Development Provider for the Occupational Certificate: Project Manager (SAQA ID 101869). It ends in an External Integrated Summative Assessment, and the QCTO issues the certificate. Check the enrolment dates in the accreditation section above before you plan a group.

Can project management training be run in-house for our team?

Yes. A BOTI facilitator can run the course at your premises, using your own project scenarios as case studies. BOTI also runs training at its venue in Sunningdale, Johannesburg, and live online for remote staff. In-house delivery is usually the most economical choice once you have a group in one place.

How long does project management training take?

It depends on the level. BOTI’s options range from a 3-hour online masterclass to the 2-day Project Management Fundamentals course and the 3-day Powerful Project Management for Project Team Members. Sessions can be scheduled to limit disruption to operations. Contact BOTI for a recommendation and a quote.
