Project Management Training in Durban

BOTI runs project management courses for Durban teams in-house at your premises in Umhlanga, the CBD, Pinetown or anywhere else in the city, or live online. Your staff learn together and apply each method to the projects they actually run. Most teams start with the two-day Project Management Fundamentals course. You can also browse all BOTI project management, agile and process improvement courses.

The training suits the people who run your port schedules, factory lines, logistics flows and retail rollouts. It gives them one practical way to scope, plan and control work under real KZN deadlines.

Why Durban businesses train project managers on-site

Durban runs on movement. The city’s economy leans heavily on ports and logistics, manufacturing and retail. Each of these depends on projects landing on time and on budget: a terminal upgrade, a warehouse fit-out, a new production line or a multi-store retail refresh.

That is where project management capability pays back. Demand may surge through KZN’s ports and freight corridors, or a manufacturer may commission new plant. Either way, the difference between a smooth rollout and an expensive overrun usually comes down to whether your people can scope, schedule, budget and control a project properly.

Training your staff on-site, as a team, has clear advantages over sending one or two people on a public course. Everyone learns the same methods and applies them to projects you have running. They walk out with a shared way of managing work: the same templates, the same stage gates and the same risk register.

In-house and on-site delivery across Durban

BOTI brings the training to you. Facilitators deliver at your premises wherever your teams sit:

  • Umhlanga: head offices, financial and professional services, and the Ridgeside and Cornubia business nodes.
  • The Durban CBD: port-adjacent operations, logistics and shipping firms, and public-sector teams near the harbour and city centre.
  • Pinetown and the New Germany / Westmead corridor: manufacturing, warehousing and industrial operations across the western suburbs.

On-site delivery means no travel for your staff, fewer lost office days and no scheduling around a fixed public date. Sessions can be planned around your shift patterns and operational peaks. This helps when you cannot pull a whole team off the floor or out of the terminal at once.

If you would rather not host the training, BOTI can run the same programme live online, or at BOTI’s venue in Sunningdale, Johannesburg. The course content and outcomes stay the same in every format.

What the course teaches

The programme takes participants through the full project lifecycle. Wherever possible, your own Durban projects serve as the worked examples:

  • Initiating: defining scope, objectives, deliverables and a business case.
  • Planning: work breakdown structures, realistic scheduling, resourcing and budgeting.
  • Executing: running the team, managing suppliers and contractors, and keeping work on track.
  • Monitoring and controlling: tracking cost and schedule, managing change and reporting to stakeholders.
  • Closing: handover, sign-off and capturing lessons learnt.
  • Risk and stakeholder management: identifying what can go wrong and keeping the right people informed.

Participants practise building the tools they will use the next day: a project charter, a schedule, a budget tracker, a risk register and a stakeholder plan.

Choose the right project management course

BOTI offers several levels, so you can match the course to your team’s experience:

Who it is for

The course suits a wide range of Durban roles, including:

  • Team leaders, supervisors and managers who run projects without a formal project manager title
  • Operations, logistics, warehousing and supply-chain staff in port and freight businesses
  • Engineering, production and maintenance teams in KZN manufacturing
  • Retail and store-operations staff managing rollouts, refurbishments and seasonal launches
  • Office and administrative staff coordinating internal projects and deadlines

No prior project management qualification is needed. The course works for first-time project owners and for experienced staff who want a consistent, structured method.

Accreditation

The project management short courses on this page are professional skills programmes and are not accredited.

If your team needs a formal qualification, BOTI is a QCTO-accredited Skills Development Provider for the Occupational Certificate: Project Manager (SAQA ID 101869). The qualification is registered at NQF Level 5 with 240 credits[1]. It combines knowledge, practical skills and workplace experience. It ends in an External Integrated Summative Assessment (EISA), and the QCTO issues the certificate. BOTI will confirm the scope and delivery plan for your team when it quotes.

Last dates for new enrolments: Project Manager (SAQA ID 101869): enrol by 30 December 2026, complete by 30 December 2029[1]. New learners must enrol on or before 30 December 2026. Ask BOTI about the options after that date.

Funding: skills development levy, grants and B-BBEE

In-house project management training is part of your skills development spend. These are the rules that affect how that spend is reported:

Lever How it works
Skills Development Levy (SDL) Employers pay SDL at 1% of the leviable amount (total remuneration)[2]. Employers whose leviable amount over the next 12 months will not exceed R500,000 are exempt[2].
SETA mandatory grant The mandatory grant pays back 20% of levies paid. To qualify, you submit your Workplace Skills Plan and Annual Training Report by 30 April and keep your levies up to date[3]. Unclaimed mandatory grant money moves to discretionary funding by 15 August[3].
Skills Development element (B-BBEE) The amended generic Codes set an overall skills development target of 6% of the leviable amount. This is made up of 3.5% on learning programmes for black people and 2.5% on bursaries for black students at higher education institutions. A further 0.3% applies to black employees with disabilities[4]. Sector codes may differ.
Team economics An in-house group is quoted as one programme for your team rather than as individual public-course seats, and your staff do not travel.

This is general guidance to help you plan, not financial or legal advice. BOTI cannot promise grants or scorecard points. Your SETA and your B-BBEE verification agency confirm how the spend is treated.

Yes. BOTI adapts examples and exercises to your context, whether that is ports and logistics, KZN manufacturing, warehousing or retail. The methods are then applied directly to the projects your team runs.
