Training Advice
MicroStation 3D Course (3 days)
Experienced MicroStation users model in 3D, extract drawings from the model and present designs with realistic renders and fly-throughs.
Many teams draft confidently in 2D MicroStation but switch to other software – or to hand sketches – as soon as a design needs a 3D model, a coordinated section or a client presentation. MicroStation 3D training lets them do that work in the tool they already know, with one model feeding the drawings and the visuals.
This three-day course builds on 2D skills. Day one covers working in 3D: the design cube, view orientation, active and display depth, AccuDraw in 3D with auxiliary coordinate systems, 3D primitives, and creating and modifying solids. Day two covers solid utilities, B-spline and free-form surfaces, surface modification and meshes, 3D cells and patterning, exchanging 2D and 3D data, and drawing composition – plans, sections and elevations taken from the model and annotated on sheets. Day three is visualisation: perspective views and cameras, lighting, materials, photo-realistic rendering of a building scene, solar studies and fly-through animations.
Each topic is demonstrated and then practised, and the exercises build towards a complete model that is documented and rendered by the end of the third day. Send us a typical model or drawing and the facilitator can use it in the practice.
Why this course
For your organisation
- 3D models, drawings and presentations produced in-house in one tool
- Sections and elevations that come from the model instead of being redrawn
- Clearer design reviews with renders, shadow studies and fly-throughs
- More value from the MicroStation licences you already hold
For your delegates
- Confidence moving and drawing accurately in 3D space
- Practical skills with solids, surfaces and 3D cells
- A method for taking drawings off a 3D model
- Rendering, lighting and animation skills for presentations
What delegates will be able to do
- Set up 3D design files and control views, depth and clip volumes
- Use AccuDraw and auxiliary coordinate systems to place points accurately in 3D
- Create and edit solids from primitives, extrusions, revolutions and Boolean operations
- Build and modify B-spline and free-form surfaces
- Use 3D cells and patterns and exchange 2D and 3D data
- Compose plans, sections and elevations from the model and annotate them
- Apply lights and materials and produce photo-realistic renders
- Create solar studies and fly-through animations
Who should attend
CAD technicians, draughtspersons, designers and engineers who already draft in 2D MicroStation and need to model, document and present in 3D – for example in plant, infrastructure, architecture and mining. Delegates should have completed MicroStation Fundamentals or have equivalent 2D MicroStation experience.

Frequently asked questions
Can you run the course at our offices?
Yes. We train at your offices anywhere in South Africa, at a BOTI venue, or live online, on your own MicroStation installations or on laptops we supply on request.
How many people can attend?
From one delegate to a group of about 20, each at their own computer. The price per delegate drops as the group grows – see the price table, or ask us for a quote.
Is it accredited?
No – it is a non-accredited short course and delegates receive a BOTI certificate of attendance.
Do delegates need MicroStation experience?
Yes. This course assumes confident 2D MicroStation use, including AccuDraw, levels and cells. Delegates who are new to MicroStation should start with the MicroStation Fundamentals Course.
Which version of MicroStation do you train on?
The version your team uses. Tell us when you book, because the interface and rendering tools differ between older V8i installations and the newer ribbon-based releases.
Can the exercises use our own models?
Yes. Send us a typical model or drawing beforehand and the facilitator builds it into the practice.
