Speaking and Chairing Meetings (Unit Standards 119462 + 242816) (3 days)

Managers who listen critically, hold their ground with confidence, speak persuasively in formal settings and chair structured meetings that reach decisions – with 10 accredited credits.

Speaking well and chairing well are the two skills that make a manager visible in any organisation. This accredited public speaking and chairing course combines two unit standards at NQF Level 4, each taught and assessed on its own: unit standard 119462 on sustained oral communication and evaluating spoken texts (5 credits) and unit standard 242816 on conducting a structured meeting (5 credits). Both are part of the FETC: Generic Management (SAQA ID 57712), and 119462 also forms part of the FETC: New Venture Creation (SAQA ID 66249). BOTI delivers them under its Services SETA accreditation.

Days one and two follow unit standard 119462: listening critically but with tact, spotting assumptions and hidden agendas, checking and adjusting your own responses, stating your position when others push back, and using planning, body language and rhetorical devices to hold an audience. Delegates also learn to judge what other speakers are really saying, and what they are avoiding.

Day three follows unit standard 242816: preparing a meeting, chairing it to an agenda, using techniques that move a discussion past deadlock, and issuing records that get decisions implemented.
