Personal Mastery: Goals, Habits and a Growth Mindset (3-hour online masterclass)

Take ownership of your own growth: leave with a growth mindset you can practise, three goals that matter, the daily habits to reach them and a one-page development plan.

Most people know what they should be doing differently at work. Far fewer have a way to make it happen: the goal set in January is forgotten by March, the new habit lasts a week, and the development plan sits in the HR system until the next review. This personal mastery masterclass is a three-hour live online session that gives delegates practical self-leadership tools to take charge of their own growth and performance. It is a focused cut of BOTI's full-day courses on goal setting, personal productivity and self-confidence.

The session opens with mindset: the difference between a fixed and a growth mindset, how self-talk and comparison hold capable people back, and the small shifts that change how feedback and setbacks are received. Delegates then write goals worth keeping – personal, possible and linked to the team's targets – and break them into first steps they can start this week. The third module is habits: how a habit forms, the cue-routine-reward loop, short-start rules for the tasks people avoid, and tracking progress so it stays visible. The close turns all of it into a one-page personal development plan.

Everything happens live: exercises in the PDF workbook, quick polls and breakout discussions on Zoom, and templates delegates keep. It suits individuals and whole teams at the start of a performance cycle, a new strategy or a new year, and works just as well for staff spread across offices in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and the rest of the country.

    Why this course

    For your organisation

    • Staff who set their own goals and follow through without being chased
    • Individual goals that line up with team and business targets
    • Development plans written by the employee, not for them
    • A shared language for feedback, growth and performance conversations
    • A short, low-cost session that reaches staff at every site at once

    For your delegates

    • A growth mindset you can practise, not just a phrase
    • Three written goals with first steps that start this week
    • Daily habits built on how habits actually form
    • A one-page personal development plan to take into your next review
    • Templates and a workbook you keep after the session

What delegates will be able to do

    • Describe the difference between a fixed and a growth mindset and recognise your own default under pressure
    • Rephrase unhelpful self-talk and respond to feedback and setbacks without losing momentum
    • Write three goals that are personal, possible and linked to your team's targets
    • Break a goal into first steps with a realistic deadline
    • Build a daily habit using cue, routine and reward, and start the tasks you usually avoid
    • Track progress in a simple way that keeps motivation up over weeks, not days
    • Plan your own development on one page, including the support you will ask for
    • Review the plan monthly and adjust it when things go wrong

    Who should attend

Anyone who wants to take more ownership of their own growth and performance: individual contributors, administrators, sales and service staff, graduates and interns, new supervisors and team members working towards performance targets. It works well for a whole team starting a new performance cycle, and for individuals an organisation wants to invest in without taking them out of the office for a full day.

    Course outline

Live session – Mindset, goals, habits and a plan – in one morning

Opening: taking ownership of your growth
    • How the session runs: the workbook, polls and breakout rooms
    • What personal mastery means at work – and what it is not
    • Fixed and growth mindsets in everyday language, and your own default under pressure
    • What holds capable people back: self-doubt, comparison and the comfort zone
    • Rephrasing self-talk: from 'I can't' to 'I can't yet'
    • Exercise: rewrite one limiting belief about your own work
    Goals worth keeping
    • Why written goals get finished and vague intentions do not
    • Goals that are personal, possible and linked to the team's targets
    • Making each goal specific, measurable and dated
    • First steps: what you can start this week, and a realistic deadline
    • Exercise: three goals and three first steps in the workbook template
    Habits that carry the goals
    • How a habit forms: cue, routine and reward
    • Short-start rules for the tasks you avoid: one minute, five minutes, fifteen minutes
    • Removing distractions and protecting time for the work that matters
    • Tracking progress so you can see it, and marking milestones
    • Exercise: design one daily habit, its trigger and its reward
    Close: your personal development plan
    • A one-page development plan: goals, habits, the support you will ask for and review dates
    • Receiving feedback and handling setbacks: adjust the plan, not the goal
    • Taking the plan into your next one-on-one or performance review
    • Personal action list for the next 30 days

    Frequently asked questions

    How many people can join?

From one delegate to 500 on Zoom. Small groups get more discussion time; large groups use polls, chat and breakout rooms so everyone still does the exercises.

    Do we get handouts?

Yes, electronically. A PDF workbook, the goal, habit and development-plan templates and a one-page summary are emailed before the session, so delegates can work in them during the exercises.

Can we run it privately for our team?

Yes. Choose the date and time, and we aim the exercises at your performance cycle, values or goal format. Many organisations run it at the start of a new year, a new strategy or a new review period.

How is this different from the full-day courses?

The masterclass is a three-hour cut of three of BOTI's one-day courses: Goal Setting and Getting Things Done, Personal Productivity and Assertiveness and Self-Confidence. It covers mindset, goals, habits and a development plan; the full days go deeper into procrastination, scheduling, email and files, and confident communication.

Do delegates need to prepare anything?

Only a quiet spot, a working camera and microphone, and ten minutes to look through the workbook beforehand. Bringing one real goal or a recent piece of feedback makes the exercises more useful.

    Is it accredited?

No. It is a non-accredited masterclass and delegates receive a BOTI certificate of attendance by email. For a credit-bearing route, ask us about BOTI's QCTO skills programmes.
