Setting Goals and Getting Things Done – Achieve More
Duration: 1 day
Introduction
If you have goals, you’re already ahead of 75% of the population. This course contains numerous methods of goal setting, and we’ll take you through them step-by-step for each participant to find the method that suits them best.
Course Outline
Eat the frog. Mark Twain said that if you ate a frog the first thing each morning, you could go forward in the day knowing that the worst possible thing that could happen to you, already has. Avoid procrastination and eat the daily frog; do the thing you most want to put off; first. The 15 minute rule. Quarter the hour, take four tasks and allocate 15 minutes to each. If you do not finish a task in fifteen minutes, leave it to carry on tomorrow. You’ll quickly learn what you can do in fifteen and what you can’t. Looking back at what you have achieved in fifteen minutes will motivate you even further.
The four P’s. Goals need to be POSITIVE. Goals need to be PERSONAL to you, one does not set a goal for others but for oneself. Make sure your goal is POSSIBLE. PRIORITISE your goals. Motivation – you must be motivated to achieve your goals, it helps to write your goals down and it motivates you further when you reward your successes. Some people find a point reward system helpful; such as an ice-cream equals ten points and a book equals fifty.
The long complicated module you must finish before a deadline gets you the fifty point reward. Editing your final essay gets you an ice-cream. It is also easy to track your progress this way, and when you see what you have already accomplished it gives you a boost to achieve more. Time management is very important, use the urgent/important matrix to decide on the order of tasks. Keep a calendar is very handy if you have set deadlines for assignments.
Procrastination is a killer and it’s easy to put off mundane tasks which will not make you behind schedule but will pile up on you if you don’t do them. Any mundane task that can be done in a minute fits into this category.
