What is Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt?
Lean Six Sigma is a data-driven approach for eliminating defects and waste in any business process. It combines the Lean philosophy — removing process inefficiencies — with the statistical rigour of Six Sigma to reduce waste, minimise defects, improve efficiency and lift bottom-line results.
The Yellow Belt is the entry tier. It is designed for team members who will contribute to improvement projects rather than lead them. A Yellow Belt holder understands the DMAIC framework at a high level, can perform and interpret core Six Sigma tools, and provides subject-matter support to Green Belt and Black Belt project leaders. Lean Six Sigma is not about getting rid of people — it is about empowering employees to fix the processes they work in every day.

Who should attend
This course is built for the people SA employers most often need to upskill:
- Frontline and team members who will support improvement projects
- Supervisors and team leaders in operations, production, logistics, finance or service
- Quality, process and continuous-improvement staff building foundational skills
- Department and ops managers who want a shared improvement language across a team
- Anyone preparing to progress toward Green Belt or Black Belt
No prior Lean or Six Sigma experience is required, which makes it ideal for whole-team in-house rollouts.
Certification
On successful completion, every delegate receives:
- A BOTI certificate of completion for Yellow Belt Lean & Six Sigma, and
- A 6sigmastudy™ Six Sigma Yellow Belt (SSYB™) certification (covering the Six Sigma component).
6sigmastudy™ is one of the largest credentialing bodies for Six Sigma certifications, working through a global network of Authorised Training Partners, of which BOTI is one in South Africa. The credential is recognised internationally across many industries.
Successful completion requires passing the exams set for each module (true/false and essay format) and completing a practical case study that demonstrates application of the DMAIC phases to a realistic business problem.
A note on accreditation: this is a practical, facilitator-led skills programme; delegates receive a BOTI certificate of completion plus the 6sigmastudy™ SSYB™ credential described above — it is not a SETA/QCTO-accredited qualification. Need accredited training? BOTI is an accredited training provider — Services SETA 12582, MICT SETA ACC/2016/07/0045, and a QCTO Quality Partner — so ask us about our QCTO/SETA-accredited programmes in related areas such as Generic Management and Project Management.
Delivery options for South African teams
You choose how your people learn:
- In-house / on-site — we train your team at your venue (JHB, Cape Town, Durban, Pretoria or elsewhere). Most cost-effective for groups and lets us tailor case studies to your real processes.
- Public / scheduled — individuals or small groups join a set date.
- Virtual — live instructor-led online for distributed or remote teams.
Why Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt is worth it for your business
- Fast capability uplift — a 4-day investment gives staff a working command of DMAIC and the core tools.
- Real savings — teams learn to slice out waste and defects and realise measurable financial improvement.
- A common language — when a whole team shares the method, improvement projects move faster.
- A pipeline to Green and Black Belt — Yellow Belt is the natural first step in a structured upskilling pathway.
Funded and group training
Investing in skills development can support your B-BBEE scorecard. On the B-BBEE skills development element, the spend target is calculated as 6% of the leviable amount — which is separate from the Skills Development Levy (SDL), set at 1% of payroll. Training whole teams in-house is often the most efficient way to combine capability building with scorecard contribution.
If you procure training through public-sector or enterprise tenders, note that preference points under the PPPFA regulations of 2022 are awarded against “specific goals” — such as ownership by historically disadvantaged individuals (across race, gender and disability) and RDP-aligned criteria — on an 80/20 or 90/10 basis, rather than against a generic B-BBEE level. The Public Procurement Act 28 of 2024 further provides for set-asides and preferential procurement. This is general guidance, not financial or legal advice — talk to us about structuring a group programme for your organisation.
