Basic Project Management: Plan, Deliver and Keep Teams on Track (3-hour online masterclass)
In three hours, turn the project that landed on your desk into a one-page charter, a milestone plan and a risk list – and know how to keep the team on track once it starts.
Most workplace projects are run by people whose job title says nothing about projects: the supervisor asked to roll out a new system, the HR officer running the wellness programme, the engineer moving a plant. Without a method, scope grows, dates slip and nobody can say whether the project is on track until it is late. This project management masterclass is a three-hour live online session that gives those people the fundamentals – a focused cut of BOTI's two-day Project Management Fundamentals course.
The session walks through the life of a project in four working modules. Delegates define a project on one page – objective, deliverables, boundaries and success measures – then build a plan with a simple work breakdown, milestones and a realistic schedule. They list the risks most likely to derail it and decide what to do about each one now, and they set up the light controls that keep delivery honest: a weekly check against the plan, a traffic-light status report and a way to handle changes without the scope creeping.
Every delegate works on a real project from their own job in the PDF workbook, so the charter, plan and risk register they leave with are already useful. No project software is needed – the templates work in a spreadsheet or on paper.
Why this course
For your organisation
- Projects defined on one page before anyone starts spending time or money
- Milestone plans the whole team can read, with realistic dates
- Risks raised and handled early instead of discovered late
- Short status reports that tell sponsors the truth in time to act
- A common project vocabulary across departments after one morning
For your delegates
- A method you can apply to any project the day after the session
- A charter, milestone plan and risk register for your own project
- Confidence to report progress and raise problems with a sponsor
- Templates and a one-page summary you keep
What delegates will be able to do
- Explain what makes a piece of work a project and how the life cycle runs from idea to close
- Define a project on one page with its objective, deliverables, boundaries and success measures
- Break the work into a simple work breakdown structure and set milestones
- Build a realistic schedule that allows for dependencies and the team's other work
- Identify the risks most likely to derail the project and plan a response for each
- Track progress weekly against the plan and report status in a traffic-light format
- Handle change requests without letting the scope creep
- Close a project with a handover and a short lessons-learned review
Who should attend
Supervisors, team leaders, coordinators, administrators and specialists who run projects alongside their day jobs, new project team members, and managers who sponsor projects and want to know what a sound plan looks like. No previous project training is needed, and no software beyond a spreadsheet.

How it is delivered
Live online on Zoom (or Microsoft Teams if your organisation prefers it), 2.5 to 3 hours – typically 09:00-12:00, or a time that suits the team. From one delegate to 500. Handouts are electronic: a PDF workbook, the charter, milestone plan, risk register and status report templates, and a one-page summary are emailed before the session. Frequently asked questions
How many people can join?
From one delegate to 500 on Zoom. Small groups talk through each other's projects; large groups use polls, chat and breakout rooms so everyone still builds their own charter and plan.
Do we get handouts?
Yes, electronically. A PDF workbook, the charter, milestone plan, risk register and status report templates, and a one-page summary are emailed before the session.
Can we run it privately for our team?
Yes. Choose the date and time, and tell us about the projects your people are running; the facilitator uses them as the working examples and the team leaves with plans for real work, not case studies.
Do we need Microsoft Project or other software?
No. The charter, plan, risk register and status report are simple templates that work in Excel or on paper. Delegates who already use Microsoft Project or Planner can apply the same steps there.
How does this compare with the two-day Project Management Fundamentals course?
The masterclass covers the core method in a morning: define, plan, manage risk, track and close. The two-day course goes further into selecting projects, budgets, the critical path, Gantt charts, performance measures and the kick-off and reporting routines, with much more time on each delegate's own project.
Is it accredited?
No. It is a non-accredited masterclass and delegates receive a BOTI certificate of attendance by email. For a credit-bearing route, ask us about BOTI's QCTO skills programmes.
