QCTO accredited. This qualification is accredited by the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO) and delivered by BOTI as an accredited Skills Development Provider under accreditation 07-QCTO/SDP090726181829, valid to 30 June 2031.
On successful completion and external assessment, the QCTO issues the national certificate for this qualification. Occupational qualifications are the national standard replacing the pre-2009 system, and their credits are recognised for B-BBEE skills development spend, SETA grants and learnerships.
Introduction
This qualification equips learners to start and run their own enterprise. It covers identifying and testing an opportunity, building a workable business model, setting up and running operations, managing money, finding and keeping customers, and meeting the legal and compliance basics of trading in South Africa. BOTI’s accreditation for this qualification runs to 30 June 2031 — the longest runway in the portfolio.
Qualification Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this qualification, learners will be able to:

- Marketing and selling for a small business
- Customer service and retention
- Business registration, tax and statutory basics
- Contracts, invoicing and getting paid
Assessment
Assessment is based on a combination of the following methods:
- Assignments and projects
- Practical assessments and workplace simulations
- Written examinations
- Portfolios of evidence
The qualification concludes with an External Integrated Summative Assessment (EISA), conducted under QCTO rules, which integrates the knowledge, practical and workplace components.
