QCTO accredited. This qualification is accredited by the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO) and delivered by BOTI as an accredited Skills Development Provider under accreditation 07-QCTO/SDP090726185801, valid to 30 June 2029.
On successful completion and external assessment, the QCTO issues the national certificate for this qualification. Occupational qualifications are the national standard replacing the pre-2009 system, and their credits are recognised for B-BBEE skills development spend, SETA grants and learnerships.
Introduction
This qualification prepares learners to manage a retail chain store outlet in line with head-office standards. It covers store operations, merchandising and stock control, customer experience, staff supervision and the financial performance of a store, so that a manager can run an outlet profitably while meeting the brand and compliance requirements of a national chain.
Qualification Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this qualification, learners will be able to:
- Manage the daily operations of a retail chain store outlet
- Implement merchandising and promotional standards set by head office
- Control stock, shrinkage, ordering and replenishment
- Lead, schedule and develop a store team
- Interpret and act on store financial and sales performance data
- Apply retail legislation, health and safety and loss-prevention requirements

Module 2: Merchandising and Stock
- Implementing planograms and promotional layouts

- Stock counts, shrinkage and loss prevention
- Supplier and delivery management
Module 3: Team Leadership
- Staff scheduling and shift management
- Coaching, performance and discipline
- Managing diversity and workplace relations
- Communication across a store team
Module 4: Store Financial Performance
- Reading and acting on sales and margin reports
- Budgets, targets and expense control
- Basic retail mathematics and pricing
- Reporting to area and regional management
The work experience component is completed in your current store-management role.
Assessment
Assessment is based on a combination of the following methods:
- Assignments and projects
- Practical assessments and workplace simulations
- Written examinations
- Portfolios of evidence
The qualification concludes with an External Integrated Summative Assessment (EISA), conducted under QCTO rules, which integrates the knowledge, practical and workplace components.
