Project Management Course Requirements in South Africa

To enrol on a project management course in South Africa you generally need Grade 12 (NQF 4) or equivalent, basic numeracy, computer literacy and workable English. You do not need a degree or an entrance exam to begin. At BOTI, the accredited route is the Occupational Certificate: Project Manager (SAQA ID 101869), an NQF Level 5 qualification of 240 credits[1], listed with our other QCTO occupational certificates. BOTI is a QCTO-accredited Skills Development Provider. Training runs in-house, at our Sunningdale venue or live online, and fees depend on group size and format.

Last dates for new enrolments: Project Manager (SAQA ID 101869): enrol by 30 December 2026, complete by 30 December 2029[1]. After the enrolment date the qualification closes to new learners. If you miss it, ask BOTI about its shorter project management courses.

This guide is written for two readers. The first is the employer, HR or L&D manager upskilling staff to deliver projects to one standard. The second is the individual asking what a project management course requires, how long it takes and whether it can be done online. Below we cover entry requirements, modules, duration, delivery and how fees work, and how to request a quote for your group.

What the qualification is and who it’s for

A project manager plans, runs and closes out work that has a defined scope, budget, deadline and team. That work might be an IT rollout, a construction package, a marketing campaign, a SETA-funded programme or an internal change initiative. The discipline is the same whichever sector you sit in: scope it, schedule it, resource it, manage the risk, control the cost and deliver it.

At BOTI, these competencies are delivered through the QCTO occupational qualification Project Manager (SAQA ID 101869), which BOTI is accredited by the QCTO to offer. QCTO occupational qualifications are the national standard that replaces many older SETA unit-standard qualifications. A learner who completes this route therefore holds a nationally recognised Occupational Certificate issued by the QCTO.

This page suits three groups:

  • Employers standardising project delivery across teams and regional sites.
  • HR and L&D teams planning the training in a Workplace Skills Plan.
  • Individuals who want an accredited route rather than a general short course. This includes current or aspiring project managers, team leads and coordinators.

Project management course requirements

For most people searching project management course requirements, the barrier to entry is practical, not academic. To enrol on the Project Manager qualification, BOTI generally looks for the following:

Requirement Detail
School level Grade 12 (NQF 4) or equivalent. Where a learner has relevant work experience but no matric, ask BOTI whether Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) applies.
Numeracy Comfort with basic numbers. Budgets, schedules and simple cost tracking sit at the heart of the role.
Computer literacy Email, internet and basic office software. Planning tools are taught on the programme.
Language Workable English literacy, because the role centres on planning documents, reports and stakeholder communication.
For employer groups Staff already coordinating or running work. No prior project qualification is needed to start.

There is no degree, no entrance exam and no professional membership requirement to begin. Before enrolling, check the minimum entry requirements on the qualification’s SAQA record. Where a learner lacks formal matric but has genuinely done project work, RPL may be an option. This is useful for employers formalising experienced coordinators and team leads.

How these requirements compare to college and degree routes

People researching this topic often find entry rules for very different kinds of programmes, so it helps to be clear about the differences:

  • Public college programmes usually expect a National Senior Certificate or an N-level pass. They run on a fixed academic calendar. BOTI’s QCTO route is occupational and fits around employers: you can train a working team in-house or online without a college timetable.
  • Project management degree requirements are set by each higher education institution and are usually higher, for example an admission score or a prior qualification. BOTI does not offer degrees. Its accredited route is a competence-based occupational qualification, so the entry bar is lower and the certificate is still nationally recognised.

In short, the project manager course requirements at BOTI are deliberately accessible. Employers can upskill the people already running their work, not only graduates.

What you learn: modules, credits and NQF level

The Project Manager qualification sits at NQF Level 5 and carries 240 credits[1]. It is built from knowledge, practical skills and workplace components. It ends in an External Integrated Summative Assessment (EISA), and the QCTO issues the certificate. Broadly, it develops what a project manager actually does:

  • Initiation and scope: objectives, deliverables, scope boundaries and a business case.
  • Planning and scheduling: work breakdown structures, timelines, milestones and dependencies.
  • Cost and resource management: budgeting, estimating, tracking spend and allocating people and materials.
  • Risk, quality and change: identifying, assessing and responding to risk, and managing quality and change.
  • Stakeholders and team leadership: communication plans, reporting and leading a project team.
  • Procurement, monitoring and close-out: supplier and contract basics, status reporting, corrective action, handover and lessons learned.

For an employer, that means a project manager assessed against a national standard rather than a self-declared skills list. That person can carry a project from kick-off to a clean close-out.

Duration

Duration depends on format and prior experience. As a general guide:

  • Short project management courses run from one to three days. They suit teams that need specific competencies quickly.
  • The full QCTO occupational qualification is a structured programme spread over several months. It includes the knowledge, practical and workplace components and the EISA. An employer may be able to run it within a SETA-funded learnership; confirm this with your SETA.

We scope the exact timeline to your group’s starting point and goals when we quote. Our companion guide on project management course price and duration goes deeper on timing and cost.

Delivery: in-house, online and part-time

Project management training does not have to take your people off live work. BOTI delivers in the format that fits the team:

  • In-house at your premises. This is usually the most cost-effective option for a group. It can be built around your own projects and templates, so learning transfers straight onto real work.
  • Live online, instructor-led. Sessions are interactive and need no travel, which suits distributed and multi-branch teams.
  • Part-time or blended. Working coordinators and managers keep delivering projects while they qualify.

Teams can also train at BOTI’s venue in Sunningdale, Johannesburg. In-house and online delivery let head office and regional teams train to one standard. See our guide to online project management courses in South Africa for the virtual option.

How fees work

We do not publish a single project management course price, because the right figure depends on a few things:

  • How many people you are training. The per-head cost usually drops for a group.
  • Format: in-house, at our venue, online or part-time.
  • Scope: a short skills course, or the full QCTO qualification with its workplace component and EISA.
  • Funding: whether the programme forms part of a learnership or another SETA-funded programme.

Cost is one of the most common questions we get. A tailored quote is more useful than a generic price, especially for a team. Tell us your numbers and preferred format and we will prepare a quote.

Accreditation

The Occupational Certificate: Project Manager (SAQA ID 101869) is a QCTO occupational qualification, and BOTI is a QCTO-accredited Skills Development Provider for it. Learners complete the knowledge, practical and workplace components and then sit the EISA. The QCTO, not BOTI, issues the Occupational Certificate.

Some teams need competence on a specific skill rather than the full qualification. For them, BOTI runs shorter courses such as Project Management Fundamentals (2 days), part of our Project Management, Agile & Process Improvement range. These short courses are professional skills programmes and are not accredited. Delegates receive a BOTI certificate of attendance, and outcomes are documented for your training records.

Funding: how project management training links to the levy and B-BBEE

For employers, project training can support both your levy-grant claims and your skills development spend. As general guidance:

  • The levy. The Skills Development Levy (SDL) is 1% of the leviable amount (total remuneration). Employers whose leviable amount over the next 12 months will not exceed R500,000 are exempt[2].
  • The mandatory grant. SETAs pay back a mandatory grant of 20% of levies paid. The conditions are that the Workplace Skills Plan (WSP) and Annual Training Report (ATR) are submitted by 30 April and levy payments are up to date. Unclaimed mandatory grant money moves to discretionary funding by 15 August[3].
  • The B-BBEE skills development target. Under the amended generic Codes, this target is measured against the leviable amount, not payroll. It is 3.5% on learning programmes for black people plus 2.5% on bursaries for black students at higher education institutions, 6% in total[4]. Sector codes may differ, and training spend alone does not guarantee points.
  • Learnerships. Running the qualification as a learnership may attract SETA discretionary funding where your SETA has an open funding window.

This is general guidance, not financial or legal advice. Confirm the details with your Skills Development Facilitator, your SETA or a B-BBEE professional.

Frequently asked questions

What are the project management course requirements in South Africa?

For BOTI’s Project Manager qualification you generally need Grade 12 (NQF 4) or equivalent, basic numeracy, computer literacy and workable English. There is no degree or entrance exam to begin. Where a learner has relevant project experience but no matric, ask BOTI whether Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) applies, and check the minimum entry requirements on the qualification’s SAQA record.

Do I need a degree to study project management?

No. A degree is one route, with admission rules set by each higher education institution, but you do not need one to start the QCTO Occupational Certificate: Project Manager or BOTI’s shorter project management courses. BOTI does not offer project management degrees. Its accredited route is the occupational qualification.

Is the project management course accredited?

The Occupational Certificate: Project Manager (SAQA ID 101869) is a QCTO occupational qualification, and BOTI is a QCTO-accredited Skills Development Provider for it. Learners finish with an External Integrated Summative Assessment (EISA), and the QCTO issues the certificate. BOTI’s shorter project management courses are not accredited and lead to a BOTI certificate of attendance.

How long does a project management course take?

It depends on the format. BOTI’s short project management courses run from one to three days. The full QCTO qualification, with its knowledge, practical and workplace components and the EISA, is spread over several months. BOTI confirms the timeline when it scopes your group.

Can employers fund project management training through the skills levy?

Possibly. Training recorded in your Workplace Skills Plan and Annual Training Report supports your mandatory grant claim with your SETA, and accredited learning programmes for black employees can count towards the B-BBEE skills development element. Discretionary grants depend on each SETA’s funding windows. Confirm the details with your Skills Development Facilitator or SETA. BOTI cannot promise grants or points.
