Training Advice
Autodesk Revit MEP Essentials (3 days)
Your building services team models HVAC, electrical and plumbing systems in Revit and documents them from one coordinated model.
Building services teams are often the last to move to Revit, so they end up tracing the architect's model in 2D and finding clashes with ducts, pipes and cable trays on site. That costs redesign time and goodwill with the rest of the professional team. Revit MEP training gives engineers and draughtspersons the tools to link the architectural model, route services in 3D and produce drawings and schedules that stay in step with the design.
This three-day essentials course is built around the services workflow. Day one covers BIM for services, the interface, views, selection and visibility control, and how a services model develops. Day two sets up an MEP project on a linked architectural model, then places equipment and fixtures, builds systems, routes mechanical ductwork and pipework and creates schedules. Day three covers electrical circuits, cable tray and conduit, domestic water and sanitary plumbing, spaces and zones, annotation, sheets, collaboration and the basics of families.
Delegates practise on your own licensed Revit software, on a small building with mechanical, electrical and wet services. Send us your office template or a past project and we use it in the exercises.
Why this course
For your organisation
- Earlier clash detection between services, structure and architecture
- Services drawings and schedules that update when the architect's model changes
- Engineers and draughtspersons ready for BIM projects with other consultants
- More value from the Revit licences you already hold
For your delegates
- A clear routine for setting up a services project on a linked model
- Hands-on practice with ducts, pipes, circuits and plumbing systems
- Confidence with spaces, zones, schedules and sheets
- A training guide and practice files to keep for reference
What delegates will be able to do
- Navigate Revit, create views and control visibility for mechanical, electrical and plumbing drawings
- Set up an MEP project with the correct units and a linked architectural model
- Place equipment, fixtures and devices at the correct levels and connect them into systems
- Route ductwork and pipework with fittings and check systems for disconnections
- Create power and lighting circuits and model cable tray and conduit
- Model domestic water and sanitary systems
- Define spaces and zones and schedule their data
- Annotate the model and publish coordinated sheets
Who should attend
Mechanical, electrical and wet services engineers, technologists and draughtspersons, and building services designers who need to model and document HVAC, electrical and plumbing systems in Revit. Delegates should be able to read building services drawings; no previous Revit experience is needed.
Course outline
Day 1 – Revit and BIM for building services
Revit for building services at a glance
- How a services model sits alongside the architectural and structural models
- Mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems in one Revit model
- What BIM changes for services consultants: coordination, quantities and clash checks
- BIM maturity levels, team roles, deliverables and appointment terms
Interface, navigation and views
- Ribbon, properties palette and project browser
- Plans, sections and elevations from one model
- Callouts, drafting views and displaced views
- 3D views, perspectives and walkthroughs
- Grids, levels and dimensions
Selecting and editing elements
- Selection methods and filters
- Instance parameters versus type parameters
- Move, copy, align, rotate and the other edit tools
- Snaps and temporary dimensions
Controlling what each view shows
- Object styles for the whole project
- Overrides per view, per element and per line
- View discipline settings for mechanical, electrical and plumbing views
- View templates for consistent drawings
How a services model develops
- BIM is more than 3D: managing information, not only geometry
- Adding the right level of detail at each stage
- Starting from a good project template
- Keeping models light and responsive
Day 2 – Project setup and mechanical systems
Establishing an MEP project
- Project units for HVAC, electrical and piping
- MEP settings and symbols
- Linking the architect's Revit model and AutoCAD drawings

- Choosing the right reference: finished floor, structural slab, floor soffit or ceiling
- Column and beam positions when routing services
- Editing system families such as walls and floors
Equipment, fixtures and families
- Family types: system, loadable and in-place
- Placing mechanical equipment, fixtures and devices
- Connectors and why they matter
- In-place families from extrusions, blends, revolves and sweeps
Introducing systems
- System types and classifications
- Connecting equipment into supply, return and exhaust air systems
- The system browser
- Project settings that control how systems display
Mechanical systems
- Mechanical settings, duct types and pipe types

How it is delivered
Three days, 08:30-16:00. Training runs on your licensed Autodesk software at your offices (or on licensed machines you provide), anywhere in South Africa. One delegate or a group of up to about 20, each at their own workstation. Each delegate receives a training guide and practice files; exercises can use your office template on request. We deliver it at your offices in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban, Cape Town and anywhere else in South Africa, at a BOTI venue in Johannesburg, or live online for teams in different places.
AutoCAD, Revit, Inventor and Civil 3D are registered trademarks of Autodesk, Inc. BOTI is an independent training provider.

Frequently asked questions
Can you run the training at our offices?
Yes. The facilitator comes to your offices anywhere in South Africa and trains on your own licensed Revit installations, or on licensed machines you provide. BOTI does not supply Revit software or licences.
How many people can attend?
From one delegate to a group of about 20, each working at their own computer. Smaller groups get more one-on-one time with the facilitator.
Is the course accredited, and will delegates get a certificate from Autodesk?
No to both. It is a non-accredited short course and delegates receive a BOTI certificate of attendance. BOTI is an independent training provider, not an Autodesk training partner. Delegates who want a vendor credential can book the Certified Professional exam that Autodesk offers through Pearson VUE themselves.
Which Revit licence do we need?
Full Revit. Current versions include the architecture, structure and MEP tools in one product, but Revit LT leaves out the MEP systems tools, so check what your team has before booking.
How is this different from the Architecture and Structure courses?
All three share the same Revit basics. This course spends its time on ducts, pipes, circuits, plumbing and spaces. The Autodesk Revit Architecture Essential Training Course covers walls, roofs, stairs and construction documents, and the Autodesk Revit Structure Essentials Course covers the structural frame, foundations and phasing.
Can the exercises use our own projects?
Yes. Send us your office template or a past project before the course and the facilitator builds it into the practice.
