Training Advice
Basic Workplace Research and Data (Unit Standards 9009 + 8418) (3 days)
Staff who organise and read data correctly, draw sensible conclusions from it, and run a small research project at work from planning to a short presentation – with 7 accredited credits.
Good decisions start with good questions and reliable information. This accredited research skills course combines two unit standards, each taught and assessed on its own: unit standard 9009, a fundamental unit standard on basic statistics and probability (NQF Level 2, 3 credits), and unit standard 8418 on doing basic research (NQF Level 2, 4 credits). Both are part of the National Certificate: Business Administration Services (SAQA ID 23833), and BOTI delivers them under its Services SETA accreditation.
Day one follows unit standard 9009: reading tables correctly, recording and organising data, calculating the mean, median, mode, range and quartiles, drawing pie charts, bar graphs and stem-and-leaf plots, and explaining what the data says about trends and groups of people.
Days two and three follow unit standard 8418: planning a small research project around the way work flows through the organisation, collecting information through interviews, analysing it with a flow chart, presenting the findings in a five-minute talk with slides and looking back honestly at one's own part in each phase.
